Doncaster Sports Club renovation benefits from new radiators

Stelrad Radiators, one of South Yorkshire’s major manufacturers and employers, has an impressive track record of supporting local charities and sports organisations so it was fitting that it has recently provided eight new Compact radiators to help renovate Doncaster Town Field Sports Club (DTFSC).

Whilst DTFSC is the home of Doncaster Town Cricket Club (est. @1920) and Doncaster Hockey Club, it acts as a hub for a large variety of grass-root groups, charities and for the local community in general, who call in to relax and meet others in a safe space away from the nearby city centre.

The community groups vary enormously from PROBUS (Professional Business people), Railway Groups (NYMR & Pennine), Parents Loss United, Drama Groups and recently a Line Dancing group.

There is a catering facility offering Sunday roasts, buffets, as well as meals for the various sports teams. Overall, the Club and its premises are used by over 2000 people – men, women and children from 5 to 85.

Three years ago, Stuart Biltcliffe became Chairman of DTFSC. He initially oversaw improvements to the external fabric of the building;

  • Repairing the roof
  • Re-rendering the whole building
  • Replacing the soffits, downpipes
  • Repainting & strengthening the external doors
  • Railings were repainted.
  • Car Park lighting & CCTV installed.

The installation of solar panels, batteries and cellar insulation followed. Changing Rooms were repaired and redecorated. New lighting was installed.

All of this was achieved with funding within the Clubs own finances.

Attention then turned to the inside of the Club.  In particular the two “Community Rooms” – the Function Room and the former Pool Room. These rooms were described by their users as “tired”, “cold”, “uninviting”, “lacking in modern day facilities”.

With the help from SYFAB (South Yorkshire Funding and Advice Bureau) a National Lottery Funding bid was made. To everyone at the club’s great delight the bid for £20,000 was successful. However, this wasn’t enough to cover the extensive list of improvements required!!

The decision was then taken to “enlist” Club volunteers to undertake much of the manual clearance work before individual local contractors and tradesmen took over with the skilled work and fitting. Further savings were identified with sponsorship agreements.

Amongst the companies approached was Stelrad Radiators which was asked if it might supply radiators for the revamped heating system. The old radiators were inefficient, unreliable and dated in appearance. Stelrad was pleased to help and offered eight new radiators for the project free of charge.

Stuart commented: “The feedback from the users of the rooms has been really positive – and not a single complaint about the heating! Both rooms now are smart, professional, warm and welcoming – no longer school dining rooms! We are really proud of the results – and so are our users. Stelrad’s contribution has been magnificent.”

Stelrad’s Lexi Kelly says the company is proud to have been able to help the club with the new radiators: “We try to be helpful to deserving local causes and we’re pleased to have been able to provide the radiators for this project. They look very smart in the renovated club house and members there have been very complimentary about the resulting increase in warmth in the building. We wish Stuart and the members at the club the best for the coming season – and for many years ahead!”
