Stelrad Concords warm new fire station in Avonmouth, Bristol

Forty-five of Stelrad’s popular Concord Plane radiators have been installed in the new Avonmouth Fire Station – the first of a number of fire stations in the Avon Fire & Rescue Service area to benefit from refurbishment.

The St Andrew’s Road fire station was built in 1958 but it is now being knocked down to make way for a “modern, fit-for purpose” building. The new £4m building was given the green light by Bristol City Council planners in 2019.

As part of the redesign, the fire station will see designated showers and changing rooms for female firefighters. Avon Fire & Rescue Service has said the new station will help improve response, operational efficiency and prevention work for both staff and the community. Following an 18-month build, the new station will feature five new double depth appliance bays, office and accommodation facilities, a lecture theatre, training and skills provision. It has been designed by building consultancy firm AHR.

Stuart Howison, major projects manager AF&RS, said: “The redevelopment of Avonmouth is the first station in our ‘Reinvesting for the Future Programme’ and supports our plan to make our communities safer and making our service stronger. The proposed redevelopment is both modern in design, whilst maintaining and improving operational functionality.”

A two-storey accommodation wing has been designed to improve response time to ‘call outs’, as well as include amenities and working areas that are better suited to staff. Further facilities benefiting firefighters include a new kitchen and dining area, modernised change facilities and showers, as well as individual quiet rooms which provide valuable space for staff to relax and take a break in.

The Stelrad Concord Plane radiators have been supplied in a variety of models to fit the rooms in the new station, both horizontal and vertical models – with new radiators for the communal areas – the offices and the corridors – and smaller models for the quiet areas for the team members to relax in between call outs.

“We’re delighted that our radiators were specified for this new building and particularly to illustrate that radiators have a role to play in commercial buildings as well as in residential ones where we tend to think of them mainly being installed,” said Neil Jarman, Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the South West and South Wales. “These radiators work really well in this modern building – both in the way they share heat around the premises and their aesthetic look which matches the modern style of the station.”
