Josh shortlisted for Apprenticeship Award

Josh Gavin (20) from Herringthorpe in Rotherham has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year – Engineering/Manufacturing in the South Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.

Building on the resounding success of the prestigious 2025 event, this year promises to be even more spectacular with 14 category awards designed to honour the outstanding apprenticeship network flourishing across the region. The Awards event takes place at Sheffield United FC, on Thursday 21st May.

Josh went to school at Oakwood High School in the town. He’s currently in his third year of a three-year apprenticeship in Mechatronics at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) which partners in close association with the University of Sheffield. He works in the Maintenance team at Stelrad Radiators Limited in Mexborough, one of South Yorkshire’s leading manufacturing businesses, a company that manufactures in excess of two million steel radiators a year for the UK heating sector, and distributes hundreds of thousands of radiators each month through its National Distribution Centre on the same site in Mexborough. Stelrad has grown from being a small producer of radiators and fire grates back in 1936 to Europe’s leading radiator manufacturer with plants in the Netherlands, Turkey and Italy as well as here in Yorkshire. It has in excess of 50% of the total market share of radiators across Europe and is the number one supplier in six major markets in Europe.

Josh will complete his apprenticeship within the next three months and progress into the role of a mechatronic engineer in the maintenance team where he will have the opportunity to take further courses expanding his knowledge base and establish himself as a team member. Stelrad will support him in his aim to get either an HNC or and HND and thereafter the world is his oyster with Stelrad’s reputation for supporting young members of the team through to the level they want to achieve, even up to degree level.

Josh reports to Ash Woodcock, Maintenance Manager at Stelrad Radiators who comments: “Josh is an enthusiastic and hard-working individual with an excellent attitude towards his work. He approaches every task with commitment and consistently gives his full effort from start to finish.

“Throughout his apprenticeship, I have seen Josh develop from a shy and reserved individual into a confident engineer who communicates effectively with colleagues across the team. His technical development has also been impressive; he has proven himself to be a highly capable multi-skilled engineer with proficiency in both mechanical and electrical engineering. His skill set includes experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, as well as welding and fabrication.”

Everyone at Stelrad wishes Josh the very best in these awards and hopes he will be returning from Sheffield United in May with the award for this category.
